As a Christian, I had never really thought about that question until I heard the late Voddie Bachaum teach on this topic from 2 Peter 1:16-20 (and other scriptures.) Prior to that I had just accepted the Bible as fact and expected that all people were aware of the Protestant Christian Bible and would know and understand why I believe it to be God’s Word. It never occurred to me that I should be better equipped to answer challenges as to why I believe the Bible to be God’s Word.

I have unashamedly adopted Voddie’s explanation as to why as a Christian, I choose to believe the Bible.

“The Bible is a reliable collection of historical documents written by eyewitnesses during the lifetime of other eyewitnesses. They report supernatural events in fulfillment of specific prophecies, and claim that their writings are divine rather than human in origin.”

Other facts about the Bible include; there are 66 volumes written from 3 continents by 40+ authors in 3 different languages addressing 100’s of topics over a period of 1500 years. Yet through it all is the story of man’s relationship with God and God’s relationship with man.

The Bible tells the story of humanity’s creation, fall, and continued rebellion against their Creator God. Then it tells the story of the merciful and gracious God who, from the beginning, had the plan of redemption to save humanity from their sinful rebellion against Him by the gift and sacrifice of the Son of God/son of Man; Jesus Christ the righteous. With Christ Jesus’s resurrection from the dead, righteousness before God was possible through the person of Christ Jesus himself.

The imputation of Christ’s righteousness to man and the wiping out of the sin debt through repentance and confession of sin, coupled with the belief in Jesus Christ as Lord as well as what he accomplished on the cross and by his resurrection, is the Good News (the Gospel) that has come to us all. Yet all will not believe the Gospel of Christ.

This message and theme are woven together throughout the Bible in a coherent, cohesive and rational Divine voice, in spite of the fact that it had 40+ human authors and was written over a period of 1500 years. See 2 Timothy 3:16 and 2 Peter 1:21 (ESV).

Lastly, I believe the Bible to be the Word of God because the Holy Spirit empowered me to believe by doing his work in my desperately wicked human heart. (Ephesians 2:8,9 ESV.)
